E.K. was inspired by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky’s cult science-fiction novel The Snail on the Slope (Улитка на склоне). In this striking geometric abstraction, a luminous white snail shell spirals prominently in the foreground - a direct visual homage to the book’s central metaphor. Stylized figures with glowing oval heads move in quiet procession through a fragmented winter landscape of bare trees, angular crystalline forms, and shifting planes of color.
The painting captures the novel’s profound themes: the slow, inexorable movement of progress, the tension between civilization and untamed nature, the absurdity and mystery of human systems, and the winding path of personal and collective transformation. Rich earth tones blend with cool teals, indigos, and warm ochres to create a meditative yet dynamic atmosphere that invites reflection on life’s cycles, resilience, memory, and our place within larger, often incomprehensible forces.
